About

The Apistogramma cacatuoides Double Red is a captive-bred colour strain of the Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid — one of the most widely kept and beloved species in the entire Apistogramma genus. The Double Red variety is distinguished by vivid red to orange-red colouration on both the dorsal fin spines (which, in the wild type, are characteristically elongated like a cockatoo's crest) and the caudal fin, set against a warm golden-yellow body.

A. cacatuoides is native to the Amazon lowlands of Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia, where it inhabits warm, slow-moving streams and flooded forest areas with sandy substrates and abundant leaf litter. It is notably more adaptable than most Apistogramma species, tolerating a wider range of water hardness and pH — a quality that is retained in the Double Red captive-bred strain. This adaptability makes it the most commonly recommended Apistogramma for aquarists new to the genus.

Males are significantly larger than females and develop the characteristic enlarged dorsal spine rays that give the species its common name. Females are small, yellow, and intensely coloured when guarding fry. Both sexes exhibit fascinating cichlid personality and parental behaviour. The Double Red's robust constitution, manageable size, and spectacular colour make it an outstanding choice for beginner to intermediate aquarists.

Care Guide

Tank Setup

Minimum 80 litres for a pair; a larger tank of 100+ litres allows for a harem arrangement (one male and two to three females). Fine sand substrate is ideal to allow natural sifting and cave digging. Provide at least one cave per female — coconut shell halves, clay pots, and commercial cichlid caves all work well. Add driftwood, leaf litter, and dense planting for territorial division and a naturalistic aesthetic. Low to moderate lighting.

Water Parameters

Temperature 24–28 °C. The Double Red is notably tolerant of a wider range of water chemistry than most Apistogramma — pH 6.0–7.5 is acceptable, though soft to moderately soft water (GH below 15, KH below 8) is preferred and recommended for breeding. Perform 20–30% weekly water changes. Keep nitrates below 25 ppm.

Feeding

Highly adaptable feeders. They readily accept high-quality micro pellets, granules, and flake food as a staple, along with frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Feed small amounts two to three times daily. Supplement with live or frozen foods regularly to maintain condition and colour vibrancy.

Tank Mates

The most community-friendly Apistogramma species. Compatible with small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, and otocinclus. Avoid housing multiple male A. cacatuoides together unless the tank is very large. Do not keep with nippy or aggressive species.

Behaviour

Males are bold, active, and display energetically toward rivals and potential mates. The elevated dorsal rays are spread prominently during displays. Females are attentive, dedicated mothers. A spawning female will vigorously defend her brood, often repelling fish many times her size. This is one of the most engaging and personality-rich dwarf cichlids available.

Health

The hardiest Apistogramma commonly available. Resistant to a wider range of conditions than most congeners. Internal parasites and bacterial infections are the main health concerns. Quarantine new fish for three weeks and maintain clean, stable water. An excellent species for aquarists new to cichlid keeping.
