Apistogramma cruzi
Also known as: Cruz's Dwarf Cichlid, Ucayali Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Peru, Rio Ucayali)
Apistogramma cruzi is an infrequently exported species from the Rio Ucayali drainage in Peru. It stands out for its more elongated body form relative to most Apistogramma and the intense blue-black markings that develop on the flanks of dominant males. As a blackwater specialist, it demands soft, acidic water and a well-decorated aquarium with plenty of retreat spaces.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-6, KH 0-2; strict blackwater parameters required. Tank: 80L minimum; dense driftwood, caves, and leaf litter essential. Feeding: Omnivore; live microfoods and frozen bloodworms preferred; slow to accept dry foods. Behaviour: Moderately territorial; pair or harem keeping recommended. Compatibility: Best in a species or biotope setup with similarly demanding soft-water fish.
