Apistogramma diplotaenia
Also known as: Double-stripe Apistogramma, Two-banded Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Negro)
Apistogramma diplotaenia is an extreme blackwater specialist from the Rio Negro in Brazil, named for the two distinctive parallel horizontal stripes that run along its flanks. Dominant males develop extraordinary blue-violet fin colouration and an elaborate dorsal fin. Like all Rio Negro endemics, it demands near-pure, very acidic water to thrive and reproduce.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 4.5-6.5, GH 0-3, KH 0-1; extreme Rio Negro blackwater conditions essential. Tank: 60L minimum; peat filtration, leaf litter, driftwood, and dim tannin-stained water. Feeding: Omnivore; live artemia and micro-worms; very reluctant to accept dry foods initially. Behaviour: Peaceful; males defend loose territories through fin displays. Compatibility: Species tank or with other extreme blackwater specialists only.
