About

Apistogramma elizabethae is one of the most visually spectacular and coveted species in the entire Apistogramma genus. Endemic to the Rio Negro system in Brazil — one of the world's most extreme blackwater environments — it is found in waters that are almost mineral-free, deeply tannin-stained, and very acidic. These extreme habitat requirements make A. elizabethae one of the most challenging Apistogramma species to maintain successfully in captivity.

Males are immediately distinguished by their extraordinary finnage: the central caudal fin rays are dramatically elongated, forming a lance- or lyretail-like extension that is unique within the genus. The body colouration is equally striking, with vivid blue, red, and yellow tones and intricate fin patterning that becomes even more intense during spawning condition. Females are smaller and yellow, exhibiting the typical Apistogramma brooding colouration when guarding fry.

Successful long-term maintenance of A. elizabethae requires a dedicated aquarium set up specifically to replicate the extreme chemistry of the Rio Negro: near-zero GH and KH, pH below 6.5, warm temperatures, and pristine water quality. This is not a species for community aquariums or casual keeping — it belongs in a carefully managed biotope maintained by an experienced aquarist with a genuine passion for the genus.

Care Guide

Tank Setup

Dedicated species tank or carefully chosen blackwater biotope of at least 60 litres. Use fine white or silver sand to replicate Rio Negro substrates. Add abundant driftwood, dried leaf litter (Indian almond or beech), and peat filtration to achieve the characteristic dark blackwater coloration and pH. Low, indirect lighting. Absolutely minimal water movement.

Water Parameters

Temperature 26–30 °C. pH 4.5–6.5 is essential — this is a strict requirement. GH must be below 4, KH ideally 0–1. Only RO water should be used, conditioned with blackwater extract. Perform careful, frequent small water changes (10–15% twice weekly) using temperature-matched, properly conditioned water. Nitrates must be kept near zero.

Feeding

Live and frozen small foods are critical: micro worms, Artemia nauplii, daphnia, cyclops, and micro bloodworms. This species may be reluctant to accept dry foods, particularly when newly acquired. Patience and variety are key. Feed small amounts two to three times daily.

Tank Mates

Only Rio Negro blackwater specialists are appropriate: small cardinal tetras, pencilfish such as Nannostomus species, and other extreme soft-water fish. Avoid any species that requires harder or more neutral water.

Behaviour

Males display spectacular finnage and colouration during courtship and territorial display. Females guard fry intensively. Outside of breeding, the species is relatively shy — provide ample cover to observe natural behaviour. The elongated caudal fin is highly sensitive to water quality and any degradation will cause rapid fin deterioration.

Health

Extremely sensitive to water quality lapses. Any hardening or alkalinisation of the water is potentially fatal over time. Internal parasites and bacterial infections occur readily under stress. This species demands the highest level of aquarist expertise and commitment.
