Apistogramma eremnopyge
Also known as: Dark-tailed Apistogramma, Eremnopyge Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Peru)
Apistogramma eremnopyge is a rarely offered species from Peruvian blackwaters, immediately recognisable by the dark pigmentation on the caudal peduncle that gives it its name. Dominant males display rich yellow flanks with vivid blue facial spotting and elaborate fin extensions. It demands pristine, very soft and acidic water conditions to truly thrive and colour up.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-5, KH 0-2; very soft blackwater conditions mandatory. Tank: 80L minimum; heavily decorated with wood, caves, and leaf litter. Feeding: Omnivore; live foods such as artemia nauplii and micro-worms are ideal. Behaviour: Males display intense territorial behaviour during spawning season. Compatibility: Species or biotope tank recommended; avoid robust or competitive fish.
