Apistogramma gephyra
Also known as: Gephyra Apistogramma, Venezuelan Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Venezuela, Colombia)
Apistogramma gephyra is distributed across Venezuela and Colombia in slow-moving forest streams and blackwater pools. Males display an orange-yellow body with a distinct dark lateral spot and a rounded to slightly lyrate caudal fin. It is closely allied to A. steindachneri and shares its relatively forgiving attitude toward water hardness compared to more extreme blackwater congeners.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 2-10, KH 0-4; adaptable but prefers moderately soft water. Tank: 80L minimum; caves and plant cover required; sand substrate preferred. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts a wide range of live, frozen, and dry foods. Behaviour: Males moderately territorial; manageable with harem groups. Compatibility: Good with tetras, dwarf corydoras, and pencilfish.
