Apistogramma hippolytae
Also known as: Hippolyta's Dwarf Cichlid, Hippolytae Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Brazil, lower Amazon)
Apistogramma hippolytae is found in the lower Amazon region of Brazil and is characterised by a warm yellow-olive body with fine blue iridescent spotting on the flanks and a distinctive rounded caudal fin in males. It is a moderately demanding species that performs best in soft, slightly acidic water with good plant cover and caves for retreating and spawning.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft acidic conditions preferred. Tank: 80L minimum; caves, fine-leaved plants, and driftwood provide needed structure. Feeding: Omnivore; frozen bloodworms, artemia, and quality dwarf cichlid pellets. Behaviour: Males hold loose territories; females are attentive cave-spawning brood-guarders. Compatibility: Good with small soft-water tetras and non-aggressive catfish.
