Apistogramma hongsloi
Also known as: Hongsloi Dwarf Cichlid, Hongsloi Apisto, Red Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Amazon basin)
Apistogramma hongsloi is a small but brilliantly coloured dwarf cichlid native to the Orinoco drainage systems of Colombia and Venezuela. Males are among the most vividly coloured in the genus, displaying a rich red to orange-red body with yellow areas on the abdomen and cheeks, a prominent dark lateral blotch or stripe, and beautifully coloured fins edged in red or orange. Several colour variants have been developed in captivity, with 'Super Red' strains particularly prized by collectors.
Females, as with all Apistogramma, are significantly smaller and display a yellow colouration that intensifies dramatically when in breeding condition or guarding fry. The sexual dimorphism in this species is quite pronounced, making pair identification straightforward.
In its natural habitat, A. hongsloi is found in warm, slow-moving streams and flooded forest areas with soft, acidic water and sandy substrates. It is a cavity spawner, using natural depressions or caves as nesting sites, with the female assuming the primary role in egg and fry care. In the aquarium, it is best suited to experienced beginner or intermediate aquarists comfortable with maintaining soft, slightly acidic water conditions. Its spectacular colouration and interesting behaviour make it a highly rewarding species.
Tank Setup
A minimum of 80 litres (based on species typical requirements). Fine sand substrate with driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and dense planting creates the ideal biotope. Provide multiple caves to allow females to establish breeding territories. Dim, natural lighting suits this species well.
Water Parameters
Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 5.0–7.0. Soft water with low mineral content is preferred. Perform 20–30% water changes weekly. Maintain nitrates below 20 ppm. Breeding is most successful in softer, slightly acidic conditions.
Feeding
Omnivorous. Offer micro pellets or granules, frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. Variety is key to maintaining colour vibrancy and immune health. Feed small amounts two to three times daily.
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, and otocinclus are compatible. Avoid other Apistogramma and aggressive species. Ensure tank mates can tolerate soft, warm water.
Behaviour
Males are territorial and use vibrant colour displays to establish dominance and court females. Females are devoted mothers and will aggressively defend fry from perceived threats, including much larger fish. Outside of the breeding context, this species is calm and undemanding toward non-cichlid companions.
Health
Maintain warm, soft, clean water to prevent stress-related illness. Internal parasites and bacterial infections are the primary health concerns. Quarantine new arrivals for at least three weeks.
