Apistogramma juruensis
Also known as: Jurua Dwarf Cichlid, Juruensis Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Jurua)
Apistogramma juruensis comes from the remote Rio Jurua catchment in western Brazil. Males display iridescent blue-green scaling on the flanks with a vivid yellow throat and belly, and develop pointed dorsal and lyre-tail extensions at maturity. A soft-water specialist, it rewards keepers who maintain blackwater-style conditions with reliable reproduction.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-6, KH 0-2; blackwater conditions preferred. Tank: 80L minimum; fine sand substrate, caves, and leaf litter replicate natural habitat. Feeding: Omnivore; frozen and live small invertebrates; accepts quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males hold loose territories; females take sole care of spawning site. Compatibility: Good with small, peaceful soft-water fish; avoid robust species.
