Apistogramma megaptera
Also known as: Giant-fin Apistogramma, Large-finned Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Peru, upper Amazon)
Apistogramma megaptera, whose name means 'large-finned', is a visually extraordinary species from the upper Amazon in Peru. Males develop an unusually tall, broad dorsal fin patterned in vivid yellow and black that dwarfs those of most other Apistogramma species and creates a dramatic display during courtship. It is a cave spawner with typical harem behaviour, rewarding dedicated soft-water keepers with spectacular breeding displays.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft acidic water essential for full fin development. Tank: 80L minimum; caves, driftwood, and fine-leaved plants; fine sand substrate ideal. Feeding: Omnivore; frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males perform elaborate dorsal fin displays; harems form naturally in larger tanks. Compatibility: Peaceful with small tetras and corydoras; avoid nippy species that may damage fins.
