About

Apistogramma meinkeni is found in blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro in Brazil and is a moderately sized, peacefully natured species. Males develop attractive blue-green iridescence across the flanks and vivid red fin borders when in optimal condition. As a Rio Negro endemic, it benefits from soft, slightly tannin-stained water with minimal mineral content.

Care Guide

Water: 24-28°C, pH 4.5-6.5, GH 0-4, KH 0-2; blackwater conditions strongly preferred. Tank: 60L minimum; leaf litter, driftwood, and tannin staining ideal. Feeding: Omnivore; live micro-foods and frozen artemia; accepts pellets when established. Behaviour: Peaceful; males establish loose territories around caves or root structures. Compatibility: Good with small soft-water characins and non-competing bottom fish.
