About

Apistogramma nijsseni, commonly known as the Panda Dwarf Cichlid, is one of the most immediately recognisable and sought-after species in the entire Apistogramma genus. Endemic to a relatively small area of the Ucayali River system in Peru, it is found in warm, shallow, extremely soft blackwater streams with sandy substrates and dense leaf litter.

The species' common name derives from the female's extraordinary colour pattern when in breeding condition: a vivid golden-yellow body contrasted with jet-black areas on the head and abdomen, creating a strikingly panda-like appearance. This female colouration is among the most dramatic in any Apistogramma species and is one of the reasons A. nijsseni is so highly prized by collectors. Males are somewhat less vividly marked, displaying bluish-grey flanks, a black lateral band, and colourful fin patterning.

In the aquarium, A. nijsseni requires particularly soft and acidic water for optimal health and successful breeding — it is less tolerant of harder or more alkaline conditions than some of its congeners. A well-decorated tank with multiple caves, leaf litter, and dense planting is essential. This species is best suited to intermediate aquarists who can reliably maintain the required water parameters.

Care Guide

Tank Setup

Minimum 60 litres for a pair. Fine sand substrate is important for natural behaviour. Provide multiple small caves, coconut shells, or clay pots as potential spawning sites, plus dense planting and leaf litter. Low lighting suits this blackwater species well. Gentle filtration with minimal water movement.

Water Parameters

Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 5.0–6.5. Soft water is essential — GH should ideally be below 8, KH below 3. Use RO water remineralised to soft parameters. Perform 20–30% weekly water changes. Nitrates must be kept low, below 15 ppm.

Feeding

Offer micro pellets or granules, frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Live or frozen foods are important for conditioning breeding pairs and should feature regularly in the diet. Feed two to three small meals daily.

Tank Mates

Small, peaceful tetras (cardinal, neon, ember), pencilfish, small corydoras, and otocinclus are suitable. Avoid other Apistogramma and any aggressive or nippy species. All companions must tolerate soft, acidic water.

Behaviour

Females of A. nijsseni are famously bold in defence of their fry, despite their small size. Males are territorial toward conspecific males. The female's dramatic colour transformation during brooding is one of the most spectacular behaviours in the genus. Outside of breeding, both sexes are relatively peaceful.

Health

More sensitive than average to hard or alkaline water. Internal parasites, bacterial infections, and stress-related illness are the primary concerns. Quarantine strictly and maintain soft, warm, stable conditions at all times.
