Apistogramma ortmanni
Also known as: Ortmann's Dwarf Cichlid, Guiana Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Guyana, Suriname)
Apistogramma ortmanni is a hardy and less demanding species from the river systems of Guyana and Suriname. Males develop a striking yellow-green body with blue-green iridescence on the gill covers and a bold lateral band. It tolerates a slightly wider range of water parameters than many Apistogramma species, making it more forgiving for intermediate keepers.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.2, GH 2-10, KH 0-4; adaptable but prefers soft conditions. Tank: 80L minimum; caves and plants recommended; fine sand substrate ideal. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts frozen foods, live invertebrates, and quality pellets. Behaviour: Males territorial but generally non-aggressive outside breeding periods. Compatibility: Good community fish with tetras, pencilfish, and small catfish.
