Apistogramma panduro
Also known as: Panduro Dwarf Cichlid, Panduro Apisto, Blue Panda Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Amazon basin)
Apistogramma panduro is a small, attractively marked dwarf cichlid native to the Ucayali River drainage in Peru, closely related to Apistogramma nijsseni and forming part of the same species group. Like its famous relative, it is found in extremely soft, warm, acidic blackwater environments with sandy substrates and organic leaf litter.
Males display a beautiful combination of blue-grey to silvery flanks, yellow colouration on the belly and cheeks, and a distinctive black band or cap on the head. The dorsal and caudal fins are often marked with vivid red, blue, or yellow depending on the population and individual. Females are smaller and yellow, intensifying to bright gold when guarding fry, and they share the Nijsseni group's characteristic of bold fry defence.
A. panduro was described relatively recently and has become a favourite among Apistogramma enthusiasts for its distinctive appearance and manageable size. It shares the care requirements of A. nijsseni — warm, very soft, acidic water is essential — and is best suited to intermediate aquarists with experience in maintaining soft-water conditions. Its relatively compact adult size and peaceful nature make it an excellent fit for planted dwarf cichlid biotope tanks.
Tank Setup
Minimum 60–70 litres for a pair. Fine sand substrate is important. Provide caves, coconut shell halves, leaf litter, and dense planting to replicate the natural blackwater biotope. Indian almond leaves help lower pH naturally and add tannins. Low to moderate lighting. Gentle filtration with minimal flow.
Water Parameters
Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 5.0–6.8. Very soft water with low GH and KH is preferred. RO water with mineral supplementation is ideal. Weekly 20–30% water changes. Keep nitrates below 15 ppm.
Feeding
Offer micro pellets, frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Live foods are important for maintaining colour and conditioning breeding pairs. Feed two to three times daily in small amounts.
Tank Mates
Small tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, and otocinclus are ideal companions. Avoid other dwarf cichlids and any nippy or aggressive species. Ensure companions can tolerate very soft, acidic water.
Behaviour
Males establish territories and display vigorously toward rivals. Females are bold defenders of their broods. The species displays the typical Apistogramma pattern of female-led parental care with the male patrolling the outer territory boundary. Peaceful toward non-cichlid companions outside of breeding.
Health
Sensitive to hard or alkaline water. Internal parasites and bacterial infections are common when fish are stressed. Strict quarantine protocol and consistent soft-water maintenance are essential preventive measures.
