Apistogramma pertensis
Also known as: Rio Negro Dwarf Cichlid, Pertensis Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Negro)
Apistogramma pertensis is endemic to the extreme blackwater environments of the Rio Negro drainage in Brazil. Males display a delicate pattern of thin horizontal stripes on a pale body with vivid blue-iridescent cheek patches. It is among the most demanding Apistogramma in terms of water quality, requiring near-distilled water with minimal mineral content.
Water: 24-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, GH 0-3, KH 0-1; near-pure RO water with peat filtration ideal. Tank: 60L minimum; heavily tannin-stained with leaf litter and driftwood. Feeding: Omnivore; live nauplii and copepods preferred; difficult to wean onto dry foods. Behaviour: Peaceful and somewhat shy; best kept as a pair or small group. Compatibility: Species tank or with other extreme blackwater fish only.
