Apistogramma piauiensis
Also known as: Piaui Apistogramma, Caatinga Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Brazil, Piaui state)
Apistogramma piauiensis originates from the semi-arid Caatinga biome of northeastern Brazil, a region with quite different water chemistry from the typical Amazonian blackwater habitats. This background confers good tolerance of higher mineral content and more neutral pH, making it an unusually accessible species within the genus for hobbyists with standard tap water.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 5-15, KH 2-8; significantly more tolerant of hard water than most Apistogramma. Tank: 60L minimum; caves, rocks, and moderate planting appropriate. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts a wide range of foods including flake and pellets. Behaviour: Males moderately territorial; females guard fry in caves. Compatibility: More versatile than most Apistogramma; compatible with a range of community fish.
