Apistogramma pulchra
Also known as: Handsome Apistogramma, Pulchra Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Peru, Rio Ucayali)
Apistogramma pulchra, whose name means 'beautiful' in Latin, is a Peruvian species from the Rio Ucayali system with a strongly contrasting black-and-yellow pattern and a remarkably long dorsal fin base in males. The high dorsal is particularly striking when the fish is displaying to females or rival males. A reliable cave spawner, it is well-suited to the experienced soft-water keeper.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft, warm conditions preferred. Tank: 80L minimum; caves essential; driftwood and broad-leafed plants appreciated. Feeding: Omnivore; frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and micro-pellets accepted. Behaviour: Males rival-territorial; females are assertive brood-guarders. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish with small tetras and non-aggressive catfish.
