Apistogramma sp. 'Breitbinden'
Also known as: Breitbinden Apistogramma, Broad-band Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Negro tributaries)
Apistogramma sp. 'Breitbinden' is a trade-name variant from blackwater tributaries of the Rio Negro and surrounding drainages in western Brazil. The name, meaning 'broad-banded', refers to the distinctively wide and solid lateral stripe that sets this fish apart from formally described relatives. Males display vivid contrasting colours alongside this bold marking in peak condition.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-6, KH 0-2; soft blackwater conditions required. Tank: 80L minimum; caves, leaf litter, and tannin-stained water replicate natural habitat. Feeding: Omnivore; live and frozen small invertebrates alongside quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males establish territories; harem keeping feasible in larger tanks. Compatibility: Best with small characins and other soft-water nano fish.
