Apistogramma sp. 'Maulbruter'
Also known as: Maulbruter Apistogramma, Mouthbrooding Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Colombia, upper Rio Negro tributaries)
Apistogramma sp. 'Maulbruter' (meaning 'mouthbrooder' in German) is an undescribed trade variant from blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro in Colombia. It stands out as the only known Apistogramma to routinely practice maternal mouthbrooding rather than cave-guarding. The fish themselves are small and attractively coloured, but their principal draw is the extraordinary breeding behaviour they display.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, GH 0-4, KH 0-1; extreme blackwater conditions required. Tank: 60L minimum; leaf litter, fine sand substrate, and heavy tannin staining essential. Feeding: Omnivore; live artemia nauplii and micro-worms strongly preferred. Behaviour: Female broods eggs and fry in mouth; uniquely different from all other Apistogramma. Compatibility: Species tank or with very small, non-competitive soft-water fish.
