Apistogramma steindachneri
Also known as: Steindachner's Dwarf Cichlid, Red-tail Apistogramma
Origin: South America (Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname)
Apistogramma steindachneri is widely distributed across the Guiana Shield in Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and northern Brazil. It is one of the most robust members of the genus, tolerating moderately hard water and a wider pH range than most relatives. Males display warm orange-yellow flanks with a distinctive rounded to lyrate caudal fin, making it attractive while remaining manageable for beginners to Apistogramma.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 5.5-7.2, GH 3-12, KH 0-5; one of the most water-parameter-tolerant Apistogramma. Tank: 80L minimum; caves and plant cover appreciated; adapts to various setups. Feeding: Omnivore; readily accepts flake, pellets, and frozen foods. Behaviour: Males moderately territorial; manageable in harem groups. Compatibility: Good community fish with tetras, pencilfish, and corydoras.
