About

Apistogramma trifasciata, commonly known as the Three-striped Dwarf Cichlid, is a slender, attractively marked species found in the Paraguay and lower Paraná River basins across Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia. Its distinctive name references the three dark horizontal stripes or bands visible on the flanks — a feature that sets it apart visually from the broader Apistogramma genus.

Males display beautiful blue to violet iridescence on the flanks and fins, with yellow to orange areas on the head and abdomen. The distinctive triple-stripe patterning adds further complexity to an already striking fish. Females are smaller, yellow-bodied, and show the typical Apistogramma pattern of intensified colouration during spawning and fry guarding.

In its natural range, A. trifasciata inhabits warm, slow-moving streams with sandy substrates, submerged vegetation, and organic debris — an environment that should be approximated in the aquarium. This species is generally considered an intermediate-level Apistogramma; it is somewhat more demanding than A. cacatuoides but more forgiving than the extreme blackwater specialists. A well-planted, soft-water setup with plenty of hiding places provides an ideal home.

Care Guide

Tank Setup

Minimum 80 litres. Fine sand substrate is important for natural foraging. Provide caves, leaf litter, driftwood, and dense planting. Multiple hiding places reduce stress and allow females to establish discrete spawning territories. Low to moderate lighting.

Water Parameters

Temperature 24–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.0. Soft, slightly acidic water is preferred. GH below 10 and KH below 5 is recommended. Weekly 20–30% water changes. Keep nitrates below 20 ppm.

Feeding

Offer a varied diet of micro pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and cyclops. Live foods are valuable for conditioning breeding pairs. Feed small amounts two to three times daily.

Tank Mates

Small tetras, corydoras, otocinclus, and pencilfish are suitable companions. Avoid housing with other Apistogramma in small tanks. Keep away from nippy or aggressive species.

Behaviour

Males are territorial and use striking colour displays and fin posturing to define and defend their domain. Females guard fry attentively. Outside of breeding activity, the species is peaceful toward non-cichlid companions. The triple-stripe marking intensifies during periods of excitement or stress.

Health

Prone to internal parasites and bacterial infections under stressed conditions. Quarantine all new fish for at least three weeks. Maintain consistent soft-water parameters to prevent stress-related illness.
