Apistogramma urteagai
Also known as: Urteaga's Apistogramma, Peruvian Yellow Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South America (Peru)
Apistogramma urteagai is found in Peruvian blackwater streams and is a close relative of A. agassizii, sharing many of its characteristics while displaying distinctive blue-black suborbital bars on an intense yellow body. Males develop well-defined lyre tails and are highly colourful in soft, warm conditions. It is a reliable cave spawner and the females take sole responsibility for brood care.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-6.8, GH 1-8, KH 0-3; soft acidic water essential for colour. Tank: 80L minimum; caves, leaf litter, and driftwood create optimal conditions. Feeding: Omnivore; live artemia, frozen bloodworms, and quality micro-pellets. Behaviour: Males hold harems; females are aggressive and dedicated brood-guarders. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish with small tetras, rasboras, and corydoras.
