Arapaima gigas

Arapaima gigas can exceed 2 metres in the wild and 3 metres under exceptional captive conditions, making it one of the most remarkable vertebrates alive today. It is an obligate air breather that must surface to breathe every 5-20 minutes. Offered here for licensed display facilities only; not suitable for any domestic aquarium.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.0, soft Amazonian-type water; exceptionally high filtration capacity required. Tank: Minimum 10,000L public display system with unrestricted surface access for air breathing. Feeding: Carnivore; large fish, crustaceans, terrestrial animals in the wild; can be trained to pellets. Behaviour: Apex predator; will consume anything that enters the water with it. Compatibility: Display-only species; no practical community tankmates at domestic scale.
