Toxotes jaculatrix
Origin: Southeast Asia, Australia
Toxotes jaculatrix, the Archer Fish, is one of the most remarkable and fascinating freshwater/brackish fish in existence. It has developed the extraordinary ability to spit jets of water with pinpoint accuracy to knock insects and spiders off overhanging vegetation up to 3 metres above the water surface. In captivity it readily uses this ability during feeding. Best kept in a brackish tank with a tight-fitting, waterproof lid and some emergent branches or overhanging décor. Social in groups.
Brackish water (SG 1.005–1.010) as adults. Temperature 25–30 °C. Tight-fitting lid essential — excellent jumper. Groups of 3+ work well. Feed live and frozen insects (crickets, mealworms, flies), floating pellets. Teach them to spit — hold food above the surface with tweezers.
