Melanotaenia arfakensis is endemic to the clear, cool highland streams of the Arfak Mountains in West Papua, Indonesia. It inhabits well-oxygenated, slightly soft to moderately hard water. Its relative rarity in the hobby and spectacular colouration make it a top target for serious melanotaeniid collectors. Best kept as a species group or with other highland rainbowfish.

Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet including flakes, pellets, and frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; cooler temperatures essential. Compatibility: Best with other highland rainbowfish; avoid warm-water species.
