Polypterus delhezi
Origin: Congo River basin, Central Africa
Polypterus delhezi, the Armored Bichir, is one of the most visually striking members of the ancient Polypteridae family — a group of primitive lobe-finned fish whose lineage predates the dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years. Its body is covered in bold black and cream chain-link or honeycomb banding that is unlike any other aquarium fish, making it immediately recognisable. Like all bichirs, it possesses functional lungs and must access the water surface to breathe air — this requires a tightly fitting lid on the aquarium as bichirs are capable escape artists. The lobed, leg-like pectoral fins allow it to crawl along the substrate and even make short terrestrial excursions if given the opportunity. A slow-moving but capable ambush predator, it will consume any fish small enough to fit in its substantial mouth.
Provide a well-covered aquarium of at least 300 litres with dim lighting, heavy decor, and hiding spots. Keep with fish too large to be swallowed (generally fish longer than half the bichir's body length). Feed meaty foods: earthworms, prawns, frozen krill, and sinking pellets at night when the bichir is most active. Maintain water quality with regular partial changes. Do not house with aggressive species that may damage the bichir's elaborate fins.
