Amphilophus zaliosus
Also known as: Arrow Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Amphilophus zaliosus is endemic to Lake Apoyo, a deep volcanic crater lake near Masaya, Nicaragua. It evolved from Amphilophus citrinellus ancestors that colonised the lake and developed a highly specialised elongated body for chasing prey fish in open water — a rare lifestyle among cichlids. Its graceful, fusiform shape is instantly distinctive compared to the bulkier Midas relatives. This is both a conservation-significant and scientifically fascinating species.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20); replicate crater lake clear water. Tank: 250L minimum; open swimming space essential; minimal decor suits the species. Feeding: Omnivore; pellets, frozen fish, and invertebrates; prefers mid-water feeding. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; less territorial than other Amphilophus; open-water swimmer. Compatibility: Suitable with other similarly sized mid-aggressive cichlids; avoid very small or delicate fish.
