Dawkinsia arulius
Also known as: Arulius Barb, Longfin Barb
Origin: South Asia (India — Tamil Nadu)
Dawkinsia arulius is endemic to river systems in Tamil Nadu, southern India, where it inhabits fast-flowing rocky streams. Adult males are highly distinctive: the dorsal fin develops greatly elongated filamentous extensions, and the body develops warm orange to reddish tones accented with dark lateral markings. It is a robust, active schooling fish that requires good water movement and oxygenation to replicate its stream habitat.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 6–15); well-oxygenated with moderate to strong current. Tank: 150 L minimum; rock and driftwood décor; moderate to strong filtration replicating stream flow. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, flake, algae-based foods, and frozen bloodworm or brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep in groups of 6+; males display elongated fins. Compatibility: Good with other medium-large South Asian cyprinids and peaceful robust species.
