Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Also known as: Asagi Koi, Blue Koi, Nishikigoi
Origin: Japan
Asagi is one of the oldest koi varieties, prized for the beautiful reticulated blue-grey scale pattern on its dorsal surface that contrasts with red (hi) markings on the flanks, gill plates, and fins. The pattern deepens and improves with age. Asagi is considered a "traditional" koi variety and is highly respected among koi connoisseurs.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, excellent water quality enhances the blue scale pattern. Pond: minimum 1,000 L; deeper ponds suit Asagi's mid-to-bottom swimming preference. Feeding: quality koi pellets and color-enhancing foods to develop the red flanks. Behaviour: often shyer than other koi but becomes tame with regular feeding. Compatibility: all koi varieties; peaceful community pond fish.
