Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Origin: Captive bred (Japan)
Asagi is one of the oldest and most respected traditional koi varieties, dating back to the early development of the koi hobby in Japan over 200 years ago. The defining characteristics of Asagi are the distinctive blue-grey reticulated (net-like) scale pattern on the back — produced by dark scale edges against a lighter scale centre — and the complementary red or orange hi markings that develop on the belly, lower flanks, cheeks, and the base of the fins. Medium-sized Asagi specimens have had time to develop the hi colouration more fully than smaller specimens, displaying the characteristic two-tone contrast that makes this variety so elegant. Asagi are peaceful, social pond fish that coexist harmoniously with all other koi and goldfish varieties.
Maintain in a well-filtered pond of at least 1,000 litres. Feed premium koi food throughout the warm-water season, adjusting quantity to temperature and fish activity. Maintain clean, alkaline water with adequate aeration. Protect from herons and other predators with netting. The hi colouration of Asagi may intensify as the fish matures — provide a varied diet including colour-enhancing foods for best development.
