Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Origin: Captive bred (Japan)
Asagi is one of the oldest and most respected traditional koi varieties, with its distinctive blue-grey reticulated back scale pattern and complementary red hi markings on the belly and lower body. Small Asagi specimens represent an exciting investment in growth potential — as they mature over the coming years, the hi colouration will intensify and spread, the reticulated scale pattern will become more defined, and the contrast between the two colour elements will develop into the elegant finished appearance that makes mature Asagi so admired. Young koi also offer the keeper the pleasure of watching the fish develop and grow, which many pond enthusiasts consider one of the most rewarding aspects of the hobby.
Start in an established pond of at least 1,000 litres with appropriate filtration. Young koi can be fed more frequently than adults as they are growing. Maintain excellent water quality — young koi are somewhat more sensitive to poor water conditions than established adults. Feed a quality koi growth food and supplement with colour-enhancing foods as the fish matures.
