Origin: Southeast Asia
Scleropages formosus (Banjar Red variety) originates from the Banjar River region of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is considered an intermediate variety between the Green and Super Red, displaying orange-red colouration on the scale edges with a base body tone that can appear gold to reddish depending on light and individual genetics. CITES Appendix I — all specimens sold must be captive-bred, individually microchipped, and accompanied by proper documentation. Colour intensity typically develops fully only after two years of age. Requires the same pristine conditions, enormous tank footprint, and expert care level as all Asian arowana varieties.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.0-7.0, soft to moderately hard; zero tolerance for ammonia; pristine conditions mandatory. Tank: Minimum 1500L; long wide footprint; very secure lid; minimal sharp decor to protect scales. Feeding: Carnivore; large prawns, insects, feeder shrimp, whole fish; high-quality floating pellets once trained. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; not achievable in home aquaria; requires licensed hatchery. Compatibility: Solo or with very large, fast fish in enormous aquaria; extremely aggressive toward conspecifics.
