Scleropages formosus
Also known as: Green Asian Arowana, Green Arowana, Dragon Fish
Origin: Southeast Asia
Scleropages formosus (Green variety) is native to peat swamp forests and slow rivers of peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. It is listed on CITES Appendix I and may only be traded as captive-bred, microchipped specimens with valid documentation. The Green variety displays large iridescent scales with subtle green-gold sheen and is considered the most accessible of the Asian arowana colour forms. It is a surface predator and mouthbrooder that demands pristine conditions, a spacious tank, and an experienced owner.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.0-7.0, soft to moderately hard; excellent filtration and regular water changes mandatory. Tank: Minimum 1500L, long aquarium; very secure lid; subdued lighting reduces stress. Feeding: Carnivore; large insects, prawns, feeder shrimp, pellets once trained; avoid mammal meat long-term. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; seldom bred in home aquaria; specialist hatcheries required. Compatibility: Best kept alone; may coexist with large, fast, robust fish if tank is very large.
