Scleropages formosus

Origin: Southeast Asia
Scleropages formosus (Red Tail Golden variety) originates from the Perak River system of peninsular Malaysia. Only the lower four scale rows display the vivid gold colouration in this variety, with the fifth row and body remaining darker. CITES Appendix I listed; every specimen sold must be captive-bred, individually microchipped, and accompanied by full CITES documentation. An extremely long-lived, large, and expensive fish requiring expert-level commitment to water quality, tank size, and feeding.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.0-7.0, soft to moderately hard; zero tolerance for ammonia or nitrite. Tank: Minimum 1500L; long, wide tank; very secure lid; minimal decor to prevent scale damage. Feeding: Carnivore; large insects, prawns, whole fish; train onto high-quality pellets where possible. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; not feasible in home aquaria; hatchery breeding only. Compatibility: Keep alone; aggression toward all other fish is common, especially conspecifics.
