Scleropages formosus
Also known as: Super Red Arowana, Chili Red Arowana, Blood Red Arowana
Origin: Southeast Asia
Scleropages formosus (Super Red variety) comes from the Kapuas River system of West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. All five rows of scales develop vivid red colouration, the most intense of any Asian arowana variant. CITES Appendix I — only legally sold as captive-bred, microchipped, documented specimens. Colour typically intensifies after two to three years and reaches full expression in mature fish. Requires a dedicated, experienced keeper with a purpose-built installation. Long-lived and extraordinarily rewarding for those who can provide appropriate care.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.0-7.0, very soft to moderately hard; pristine conditions mandatory. Tank: Minimum 1500L; long wide aquarium; uncluttered to avoid scale damage; very secure lid. Feeding: Carnivore; large prawns, insects, whole feeder fish; high-quality floating pellets once conditioned. Breeding: Paternal mouthbrooder; beyond scope of home aquaria; specialist licensed facilities only. Compatibility: Solo only; extreme aggression toward conspecifics and most tankmates.
