Chaka chaka
Also known as: Asian Frogmouth Catfish, Squarehead Catfish, Chaca Catfish
Origin: Southeast Asia, India to Indonesia
Chaka chaka is a highly unusual catfish from Southeast Asian rivers and estuaries that relies entirely on camouflage and ambush rather than active pursuit. Its wide, frog-like mouth can engulf prey approaching its own body length. It is nocturnal and requires live or meaty frozen foods to thrive in captivity.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, specific gravity 1.002–1.008; low-end brackish tolerated. Tank: 150 L minimum; sandy or fine-gravel substrate with leaf litter and dense décor for concealment. Feeding: Carnivorous ambush feeder; live or frozen fish, shrimp, worms; rarely accepts pellets. Behaviour: Entirely nocturnal and sedentary; lies motionless for long periods; do not startle. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; will eat any fish that fits in its mouth.
