Channa sp. 'Assam'
Also known as: Assam Snakehead, Blue Assam Snakehead, Undescribed Assam Channa
Origin: Assam, India
Channa sp. 'Assam' refers to a still-undescribed or recently described snakehead form collected from the streams and wetlands of Assam in recent years, circulating among specialist keepers under this trade name. It is immediately distinguished from other Assam snakeheads by a vivid blue-green patterning on the dorsal surface and upper flanks, combined with the characteristic snakehead body plan. Its exact taxonomic status remains under review.
Husbandry mirrors that of other small-to-medium Assam snakeheads: cool temperatures, a large aquarium with a completely secure lid, and a diet of meaty foods. Its manageable adult size of around 20 cm makes it more practical than the giant species while its spectacular colouration rivals the legendary Channa bleheri.
Captive breeding data is limited due to the species' recent introduction to the trade. Based on closely related species, biparental guarding with open-water spawning is the most likely reproductive strategy. Keeper documentation of breeding events is particularly valuable for this taxon.
Water: 18–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft; seasonal cooling beneficial. Tank: 300 L minimum; completely secure lid; structured aquarium with hiding areas. Feeding: Carnivore; prawns, fish fillet, earthworms, high-protein pellets. Breeding: Likely biparental open-water spawner; captive data sparse — keeper records valuable. Compatibility: Medium-large robust fish only; no small species.
