About

Astatotilapia calliptera, the Eastern Happy, is one of the most widespread haplochromine cichlids in the Lake Malawi drainage system, occurring in the main lake, satellite lakes, and associated rivers. It is an adaptable, generalist species capable of tolerating a wider range of water conditions than most Lake Malawi endemics — a testament to its success across diverse habitats.

Males display a colorful mix of yellow, blue, and black patterning that varies between populations, giving the species an attractive and variable appearance. This adaptability also makes A. calliptera one of the more forgiving Malawi cichlids for keepers who may not maintain perfectly alkaline conditions at all times. It is active, bold, and a reliable breeder.

Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are drab grey-brown. Males are territorial but rarely injurious to tankmates of similar size. An excellent introductory Malawi haplochromine for keepers new to the group, and interesting to experienced keepers for its ecological diversity.

Care Guide

Water: pH 7.0–8.5, 23–28°C, GH 8–20, KH 6–16; adaptable to a wider range of conditions than most Malawi Haps. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sand or gravel substrate; some rocky structure; tolerates less pristine conditions. Feeding: Omnivore pellets, frozen mysis, flake food; very accepting of varied diet; feed twice daily. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; very willing spawner; females hold ~3 weeks; separate if aggression occurs. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable with medium Haps and Peacocks; more flexible community options than strict Malawi Haps.
