Hypancistrus sp. (L062)
Also known as: Atabapo Dwarf Pleco, L062 Pleco, Blackwater Mini Pleco
Origin: Rio Atabapo, Venezuela
The Atabapo Dwarf Pleco (L062) is a tiny loricariid from the extreme blackwater conditions of the Rio Atabapo in Venezuela, one of the most acidic river systems in South America. Its dark brown to near-black body is accented with pale spots, and its diminutive adult size of just 7 cm makes it one of the smallest L-numbers available in the hobby.
This species demands very soft, highly acidic blackwater conditions with pH values as low as 4.5–5.5 being ideal. Tannins from Indian almond leaves, driftwood, and blackwater extracts should be used to condition the aquarium. Despite the blackwater requirement, adequate oxygenation and gentle to moderate flow are still important. Feed with very small algae wafers, blanched micro-vegetables, and tiny frozen foods.
Due to its extremely small size, L062 should be housed in a dedicated nano or species aquarium with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Compatible with small pencilfish, nano tetras, and small South American dwarf cichlids adapted to blackwater conditions. Avoid any species large enough to view L062 as food.
Water: pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 26–30°C, GH 0–4, KH 0–2; extreme blackwater conditions required. Tank: 60 L minimum; blackwater nano setup with Indian almond leaves, driftwood, leaf litter. Feeding: Omnivore; micro algae wafers, blanched micro-veg, tiny frozen artemia and bloodworm. Breeding: Cave spawner; possible in dedicated nano species tanks with blackwater conditioning. Compatibility: Nano species only; avoid all fish large enough to predate on this tiny pleco.
