Melanotaenia cf. splendida "Atherton" represents a geographically distinct and exceptionally coloured population of Eastern Rainbowfish from the highland streams of the Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland. Males develop a striking display of vivid red and blue colouration at maturity. A hardy, beginner-friendly species that is a particular favourite among Australian rainbowfish enthusiasts.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 120 L+, open swimming space with plants at the margins. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flakes, pellets, and occasional frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; males develop exceptional colour with age. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; a great choice for Australian native aquariums.
