Atopochilus sp.
Also known as: Atopochilus Suckercat, Congo Torrent Catfish
Origin: Central Africa (Congo rapids)
Atopochilus species are among the most specialised catfish in the family Mochokidae, possessing a prominently modified suckermouth and strongly dorsoventrally flattened body adapted to life in the turbulent rapids of the Congo River and its tributaries. They anchor themselves to smooth rock faces in extremely fast current and rasp biofilm and algae continuously.
In the aquarium these fish are genuinely challenging due to their strict requirement for very high water flow, oxygen saturation and specific feeding. A dedicated rheophile setup with powerful circulation pumps, smooth flat rocks and cool water is essential; standard community conditions will cause rapid decline.
Despite their difficulty they are fascinating aquarium subjects that reward the specialist aquarist with their unique body form and continuous active grazing behaviour.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); very high dissolved oxygen mandatory. Tank: 80 L minimum; very powerful flow; smooth flat rocks; no fine sediment that disrupts suction. Feeding: Biofilm, algae wafers, spirulina tabs, blanched vegetables; will not thrive on meaty foods alone. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep only in rheophile-specific setups; not compatible with standard community aquariums.
