Atyoida pilipes
Origin: Southeast Asia, Pacific Islands
Atyoida pilipes, the Brush Shrimp, is a fascinating filter-feeding shrimp that uses specialised fan-like appendages to sieve fine particles and microorganisms from the water column. It prefers good water flow and is an excellent biotope or specialty display species. Its unusual feeding behaviour and attractive striped body reward patient intermediate aquarists.
Provide strong water flow for optimal filter feeding. Supplement with finely powdered foods and phytoplankton added to the current. Do not keep with fish large enough to eat them. Sensitive to poor water quality and copper-based medications. Cannot compete for food with faster eaters — spot-feed near the shrimp's position. Peaceful; can be kept in groups.
