Atyoida pilipes
Also known as: Atyoida Fan Shrimp, Pilipes Filter Shrimp
Origin: Southeast Asia – widespread
Atyoida pilipes is a filter-feeding fan shrimp found across tropical Southeast Asia, closely related to the better-known Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis) but more slender and smaller in body form. Like Atyopsis, Atyoida pilipes uses fan-shaped modified chelipeds to strain fine food particles from moving water. In the aquarium it benefits from directed water flow and supplemental fine powdered foods to ensure adequate nutrition. A peaceful, non-destructive species, it spends most of its time positioned in areas of good flow, fanning through the water column. Well-suited to mature planted community tanks with reliable flow, good oxygenation, and a stable, established microbial community.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, TDS 150–300 ppm, temperature 22–27°C; well-oxygenated with directional flow. Tank: 40+ litres; provide powerhead or filter output directed across a perch; driftwood recommended. Feeding: Fine powdered spirulina, phytoplankton, and shrimp-specific powdered foods released upstream. Breeding: Marine larvae; no closed freshwater breeding cycle known. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with small fish and invertebrates.
