Aulonocara baenschi
Also known as: Yellow Peacock, Nkhomo Reef Peacock, Baensch's Peacock
Origin: Lake Malawi (Nkhomo Reef, western shore)
Aulonocara baenschi Nkhomo Reef, the Yellow Peacock, is one of the most instantly recognisable and popular peacock cichlids in the hobby. Males from the Nkhomo Reef locality develop a striking uniform golden-yellow body — one of the few Aulonocara where yellow rather than blue dominates — with electric-blue accents on the face and operculum. Females are a pale cream-brown.
The Nkhomo Reef population is found in the Nkhomo Bay area of the western Malawian shore, inhabiting sandy foraging areas. Like all Aulonocara, it uses rows of enlarged sensory pores to detect the vibrations of invertebrates buried in the sandy substrate. Males establish small territories over sandy patches where they display to females.
In the aquarium, the Yellow Peacock is an ideal choice for peacock and hap communities. It is moderately peaceful, relatively undemanding, and the intense yellow colouration of males provides excellent contrast alongside blue haps and peacocks. Carotenoid feeding maintains the yellow intensity. A popular species for beginners entering the Malawi cichlid hobby.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.8-8.5, hard alkaline; stable water quality; weekly partial changes maintain clarity. Tank: 200L minimum; sandy substrate for natural foraging behaviour; rocky structure for territorial definition. Feeding: Carotenoid and astaxanthin-enriched pellets enhance yellow intensity; frozen artemia and mysis for protein. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; 15-25 eggs per clutch; relatively easy breeder in stable community conditions. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; one of the best community haps; ideal alongside blue and red Malawi cichlids.
