Aulonocara kandeensis
Also known as: Kande Island Peacock, Kandeensis Peacock
Origin: Lake Malawi, Kande Island
Aulonocara kandeensis is a rare endemic Peacock cichlid native exclusively to the rocky coastal zone around Kande Island in Lake Malawi. Males develop a distinctive turquoise-blue coloration across the body with contrasting yellow-orange markings on the dorsal fin and cheek region — a color combination unique to this species and locality that is not replicated by any other Aulonocara.
As an island endemic, kandeensis has a limited natural range which makes it a prized species among serious Peacock collectors. Its care requirements are typical for the genus — fine sand, pristine alkaline water, and peaceful tankmates — but its rarity commands careful husbandry to maintain pure, uncontaminated lineages in the hobby.
Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Hybridization with other Aulonocara species should be actively avoided by keeping this species in species-only breeding setups or in clearly managed mixed Peacock communities. Highly rewarding for dedicated collectors.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; pristine conditions essential; avoid cross-contamination with similar Aulonocara. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sand with rocky island-style decor; good filtration; moderate lighting. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, frozen mysis and Artemia; supplement with carotenoid-rich foods for color. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; keep species pure — avoid housing with closely related Aulonocara to prevent hybridization. Compatibility: Keep with dissimilar Haps and Peacocks; do not house with other Aulonocara if breeding purity is a priority.
