Aulonocara sp. 'Lwanda'
Also known as: Lwanda Peacock, Orange-shoulder Peacock, Red Flush Lwanda
Origin: Lake Malawi, Lwanda
Aulonocara sp. 'Lwanda' is widely regarded as one of the most visually striking Peacock cichlids in the hobby. Dominant males display a vivid orange-red shoulder and pectoral blush that contrasts spectacularly against the deep metallic blue of the rest of the body. The intensity of the orange patch varies with condition and mood, but fully colored males in good health are breathtaking display fish.
Sourced from the Lwanda area of Lake Malawi, this species follows the typical Aulonocara biology: it uses a sensitive lateral line to detect invertebrates moving beneath sandy substrate, hovering in a characteristic head-down posture while hunting. In the aquarium this behavior is highly engaging and requires at least some fine sandy floor area.
Maternal mouthbrooder. Females and juveniles are silver-grey. Males are moderately territorial; keep one male per species or maintain in large tanks with adequate territories. One of the most popular and actively sought Peacock cichlids for both beginner and advanced Malawi keepers.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; excellent water quality intensifies orange coloration. Tank: 200 L minimum; fine sandy substrate; medium rockwork at borders; one male per species. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, frozen Artemia, mysis; supplement with astaxanthin-rich foods to enhance the orange blush. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; very willing breeder; females hold 3 weeks. Compatibility: Excellent in mixed Peacock and Hap setups; avoid mbuna; one male Lwanda per tank.
