About

Melanochromis auratus is endemic to the rocky southern shoreline of Lake Malawi, where it inhabits the upper zones of rocky mbuna habitat. It is one of the most visually striking mbuna due to its remarkable sexual dimorphism and dramatic color transformation between juvenile, female, and dominant male phases.

Juveniles and females display a bright golden-yellow body with two bold black horizontal stripes running the full length of the flanks, bordered above by a white stripe. This coloration is among the most attractive in the mbuna group. Dominant males, however, undergo a complete color reversal: the yellow becomes dark brown-black, and the black stripes become iridescent blue-white, creating an almost inverse of the female pattern.

Auratus Cichlids are among the most aggressive mbuna species and this must be taken seriously when planning tank composition. Dominant males are intensely territorial and will relentlessly chase and kill subdominant males, less dominant females, and heterospecific tankmates that are perceived as threatening. The species is not recommended for beginners to African cichlids.

For experienced hobbyists, however, the Auratus is a fascinating and beautiful species. A large tank with heavy rockscaping, a harem structure, and carefully selected robust tankmates can work well. The mouthbrooding behavior of the female is reliable and well-documented in the hobby.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A minimum 150-liter tank, though 200+ liters is strongly recommended to distribute aggression. Heavy rockscaping with multiple caves and visual barriers is essential. Use crushed coral or aragonite substrate. Keep one dominant male per tank with two to four females. Never house two Auratus males together in anything short of a very large tank with complex rockscaping.

Water Parameters Temperature 23–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 10–25, KH 5–15. Hard, warm, alkaline Lake Malawi conditions are required. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes. Strong filtration is important to manage the bioload of a territorial cichlid community.

Feeding Omnivorous; feed mbuna-specific spirulina-based pellets or flakes as the staple to reflect their aufwuchs-grazing feeding style. Supplement sparingly with frozen brine shrimp or Mysis. Avoid excessively protein-rich diets. Feed twice daily in small portions. Carotenoid-rich foods help maintain the golden coloration of females and juveniles.

Tankmates Highly restricted due to extreme aggression. Best kept with other robust, assertive mbuna such as Pseudotropheus species, avoiding any species the Auratus will target. Do not keep with timid or small species. Yellow Labs (Labidochromis caeruleus) are frequently bullied by Auratus and should not be combined. Careful selection and close monitoring of tankmates is critical.

Breeding Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 5–15 eggs for 21–28 days. The female should ideally be moved to a separate tank for the holding period to reduce stress. Fry are large and robust, immediately able to take crushed cichlid flake food and baby brine shrimp.
