Melanochromis auratus
Also known as: Auratus Cichlid, Golden Mbuna, Golden Cichlid, Malawi Golden Cichlid
Origin: East Africa (Lake Malawi — endemic)
Melanochromis auratus, the Auratus Cichlid or Golden Mbuna, is a classic Lake Malawi cichlid that has captivated aquarists for decades with its dramatic colour transformation and bold personality. This species belongs to the Mbuna group — a diverse assemblage of rock-dwelling cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa.
The name 'auratus' (Latin: golden) refers to the brilliant gold colouration of juveniles and females. Young fish and females display a vivid golden-yellow body with two bold black horizontal stripes outlined with white — a striking and beautiful pattern. As dominant males mature, they undergo a remarkable reversal: the body darkens to a deep navy-black while the former black stripes become gold, creating an entirely different appearance from the females.
Auratus Cichlids are highly territorial and aggressive, particularly males toward other males and toward females outside of spawning. This is characteristic of Mbuna cichlids, which have evolved in the intensely competitive rocky littoral zone of Lake Malawi. In the aquarium, the Auratus is considered one of the more aggressive Mbuna species and requires careful management.
Like all Mbuna, the Auratus is a mouthbrooder — females incubate fertilised eggs and later small fry in their buccal cavity (mouth) for approximately three weeks, protecting them until the young are large enough to fend for themselves. This fascinating reproductive strategy is a highlight of keeping Mbuna cichlids.
Tank Setup: A minimum 200-litre aquarium with extensive rock piles and caves for Mbuna. Use crushed coral or aragonite substrate to buffer the water to alkaline pH. Pack the rockwork densely to create multiple territories and break lines of sight — this reduces aggression by preventing dominant fish from constantly asserting dominance. Avoid plants, which will be uprooted or eaten.
Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28°C; pH 7.8–8.5; GH 12–20 °dH; KH 8–14 °dH. Alkaline, hard water is essential — this species comes from one of the world's most chemically stable lakes. Maintain excellent water quality with robust filtration.
Feeding: Omnivore with herbivore tendencies (aufwuchs feeder). Feed a diet based on spirulina flake and vegetable-based foods, supplemented with high-quality cichlid pellets. Avoid excessive meaty proteins — high-protein diets contribute to Malawi Bloat, a deadly internal bacterial disease in Mbuna.
Tank Mates: Keep with other Mbuna cichlids of similar aggression level: other Melanochromis species, Pseudotropheus, Labidochromis (Yellow Lab), Iodotropheus. Avoid Peacock cichlids and Haplochromines in the same display — they are better suited to different setups. Keep one male per species to avoid male-male combat.
Behaviour: Highly territorial and aggressive, especially males. Females retreat from male harassment between spawning events — provide retreat caves. Mouthbrooding females should ideally be moved to a separate tank to release fry safely.
Health: Malawi Bloat is the primary disease concern — caused by high-protein diet and stress. Maintain alkaline parameters and a vegetable-rich diet. Weekly 25% water changes are essential.
