Pristobrycon aureus
Also known as: Aureus Pristobrycon, Golden Pristobrycon
Origin: Orinoco and Amazon basins, South America
Pristobrycon aureus inhabits the Orinoco and Amazon basins and is distinguished within the genus by a distinctive golden wash on its silver flanks that deepens to a warm amber in well-conditioned adults. Its multicuspid teeth reflect an omnivorous strategy, consuming fish, invertebrates, seeds, and plant matter depending on seasonal availability.
Relative to Pygocentrus or Serrasalmus, P. aureus is less overtly aggressive and can be considered for small species groups in appropriate setups. It offers the visual intrigue of a piranha with marginally more flexibility in diet and housing management, though it remains a species for experienced keepers only.
Verify local piranha ownership regulations before purchase.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.0-7.0, soft to moderately soft (1-8 dGH); slightly acidic, soft conditions preferred for optimal golden colouration. Tank: Minimum 300L for a small group of 3; driftwood and leaf litter décor; secure lid. Feeding: Omnivore; fish fillet, frozen invertebrates, quality pellets, and occasional vegetable matter; varied diet maintains golden colouration. Breeding: Group spawning suspected; not reliably documented in captivity. Compatibility: Small species groups possible with careful management; less aggressive than true piranhas but still requires experienced handling; confirm local piranha ownership laws before purchase.
