Neoceratodus forsteri
Also known as: Australian Lungfish, Queensland Lungfish, Barramunda
Origin: Australia
Neoceratodus forsteri is endemic to the Burnett and Mary River systems of Queensland, where it is fully protected by Australian law. Unlike African and South American lungfishes it cannot aestivate, retains functional gills, and uses its lung only as a supplement in poorly oxygenated conditions. Its large paddle-like paired fins are thought to be homologous to tetrapod limbs. It is extraordinarily long-lived — individuals in captivity have survived over 80 years. Captive-bred specimens only; verify all documentation and legal requirements before purchase.
Water: 15-25°C, pH 6.5-7.5, moderately hard; cooler than most tropical setups; high oxygen. Tank: Minimum 3000L for adult; open sandy bottom; gentle current; no sharp decor. Feeding: Omnivore; earthworms, shrimp, snails, aquatic plants, pellets; slow deliberate feeder. Breeding: Eggs laid among aquatic plants; long incubation; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful and slow-moving; can be kept with large calm fish; avoid aggressive species.
